From the back cover:

The Channel Islands were the only British territory to be occupied during World War II.

My family stayed in Guernsey throughout five years of occupation and have lived all our lives on Guernsey and were all born in St Peter Port.

SO WHAT WAS FAMILY LIFE LIKE LIVING IN THE TOWN, NEAR THE HARBOUR, DURING THIS TIME?

This book re-lives the happenings and frights amongst family and friends, and real life stories from children at school and play. I was aged nine in 1940 and remember the near panic when half the population were evacuated to the UK and shortly afterwards the German air raid on St Peter Port harbour when many civilians lost their lives. The Germans arrived two days later.

Then in 1942 and 1943, the forced deportation of more than 1000 people from Guernsey to internment camps in Germany. Pictures of such great joy as the Red Cross ship Vega arrived, the Liberation Day celebration and so many other historic photographs capturing Real Lives on German Occupied Guernsey.

Evacuation, Occupation, Deportation and Liberation

Foreword to Occupation Life by Dame Mary Perkins

Molly Bihet brings to life completely as to how the occupation of Guernsey on 30th June 1940 affected the lives of those left behind.

Every parent, reading Molly’s memories in “OCCUPATION LIFE Real Lives on German Occupied Guernsey”, can relate to the agonising decisions as to whether their young children should be evacuated or not. All those feelings come through vividly.

Each chapter introduces us to a colourful Guernsey man or woman, and how they coped with living daily struggles to get food, heating and everything that was taken for granted previously, such as being able to wash with soap.

At the same time, Molly brings out the humour which, undoubtedly, helped everyone to keep their spirts up. She brings a child’s view of what it was like not to be evacuated, and how she saw the occupiers – some of whom were best kept clear of and others who obviously were missing their families back in Germany.

Her account of the deprivation of even basic foods, such as bread, was moving and the arrival of the Red Cross ship Vega was emotional for the reader. Most of all, Molly’s words show how everyone pulled together, neighbours, friends and particularly the teachers who did their utmost to make sure the children were educated and fed.

It was a privilege to see the accompanying photographs, illustrations and documents.

Guernsey should continue to be proud of those who held together so well during the occupation and those who are still here to recount their experiences for future generations.

There will always be Liberation Day celebrations on 9th May every year – emotional for all of us, but especially for those with first hand memories of this so important date.

Thank you Molly.
